Our Journey With SPD Has Begun

I have been contemplating writing this post for the last couple of months. A couple of months ago our family got the news that Jakob is a child on the mild end of the Autism Spectrum and has a disorder called Sensory Processing Dysfunction (SPD). We had been noticing little things about Jakob such as his hatred of loud noises (yelling, loud music, dog barking, lawn mower, etc...), his walking on his tip toes on hard surfaces, he won't wear clothes with tags, he doesn't like to be touched unless he initiates it, and various other things. After doing a little research online we made an appointment with his doctor to have him evaluated. His doctor diagnosed him on the Autism Spectrum and referred us to an Occupational Therapist for his SPD. Jakob loved going to the OT doctor because they just "play" with him in the sensory gym. We have to do some things at home that work alongside his therapy sessions. Jakob has ear muffs now to help with loud noises, we cut tags out of his clothes, we had to buy a weighted blanket to help with touch, Jakob does heavy jobs from an approved list, he follows a sensory diet, and some other small things help as well. Along with these diagnosis we have also learned that Jakob will need Speech Therapy. This has been an eye opening experience for our family but we know that our Heavenly Father is looking after us and that He will not give us anymore than we can handle.
